With summer in full-swing people are spending their leisure time outdoors working and playing hard.
Along with the necessary gardening tools, barbecue supplies, and pool toys don’t forget the bug repellent.
The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention are predicting a rise in cases of Lyme disease. This is due to an increase in the deer tick population.
Despite the name, other small animals carry these tiny, black-legged creatures: mice, birds, chipmunks, squirrels, opossums, and raccoons. The ticks become infected when they bite the animal and is responsible for spreading the vector-borne disease.
Humans and domesticated animals are susceptible, as the ticks are seeking a host that they can feed on.
The majority of Lyme disease cases occur in the Northeastern United States. In 2015 Pennsylvania held the dubious honor of reporting the most cases with 7,351. Due to the warmer winters, the disease has begun to spread beyond the usual boundaries.
Tick Sizes & Bites
Ticks range in size from a sesame seed to the period at the end of this sentence.
Once bitten, it takes 36 – 48 hours for the bacterium to be transmitted. If detected early it’s treatable with antibiotics.
However, left untreated it spreads to joints, heart, and nervous system. There is currently no vaccine for Lyme disease.
Symptoms of Lyme disease include:
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Neck stiffness
- Joint pain
- Bull’s eye rash
Many people believe that ticks are only a threat in wooded areas and forests, but this is false. They can occur anywhere that small mammals inhabit. This may include your own yard!
The following recommendations can prevent Lyme disease:
- Always use a repellent
- Avoid walking through tall vegetation
- Keep your grass & tall weeds cut back
- Rake leaves from yards
- Create a barrier between wooded areas and adjacent lawns with wood chips
- Perform checks on yourself, family members, and pets. If ticks are found remove immediately. If symptoms appear, seek medical attention.
